.mobi launched…yaaawn

BBC NEWS | Technology | Mobile web shake-up gets started.
I just don’t see the benefit of a .mobi extension. Surely this is utterly pointless – just detect the user string of the client browser and serve the appropriate page….
Mobile versions yes, but not hanging of another domain…it’s not even a decent 4 letter extension to type on a numerical pad – I get mmag if I don’t hold or pause the number/letter pad.
Willing to be proved wrong on this…
_UPDATE:_ Perfectly time, this announcement from the BlogSmith guys outlining how engadget etc will auto-detect and serve mobile versions shows how irrelevant the .mobi extension is.
