Ha! A virtual stockmarket for blogs – leading the way with a gazillion dollar marketshare is MovableType. This is very cool – and a great way to see the Power Law in action. Here’s Clay Shirky’s orginal article. Basically, it’s a network multiplier effect – and explains the way a few weblogs become far more popular, and the inherent unfairness in the way links multiply in a compounded way. The articles explain it better. Of course, this being the web, sites like technorati quickly came up with ways to index sites that worked *against* the inequalities of the power laws.
Interesting idea in a KM perspective – would a system like technorati’s help to uncover those people in an organisation that have genuine insight and skills, but get drowned out by those who are better networkers, have been in the organisation longer and so on? Of course, in this instance it would mean encouraging those very people to publish weblogs – a challenge in itself, maybe a system like this tied in with the traffic analysis of e-mail I posted about a few days ago?
