Folklore.org: Macintosh Stories: Busy Being Born
Wonderful collection of polaroids, shot by Bill Atkinson (mac creator, hypercard creator), of the development of the Macintosh GUI. Annotated by Andy Hertzfeld, another key Mac creator, this is a really interesting glimpse into the early days of the interface that we all still use, one way or another.
In fact, the whole website’s pretty damn interesting – mostly Hertzfeld reminiscing, but Susan Kare and other alumni have made contributions. Apple History is another interesting primary source website about early Apple culture.
The software used to do the Folklore website is going to be released as open source – it’s designed entirely around the idea of colaborative, historical capture. Great idea – I asked a while ago where all this early work had gone, as we seem to have lost a huge raft of work that we could learn from.
