Nice riff on why the technology of paper books isn’t doomed…
I agree, but there’s a stronger element to his argument about thin sliced content in general, particularly for computer and handheld devices.
Long form content, i.e. the novel, suits a book format, because the medium itself doesn’t jump at your attention span in the same way an IM’ng, RSS reading, email displaying PC or phone screen does.
This ties directly into my idea for ‘two minute modules’ – it’s a hard art to refine messages and information into short, attention busting bursts, but if you’re delivering a screen-based chunk of info, make it pausable, scanable, linkable and ultimately, disposable
