Average Reading Time: less than a minute.

Reality Check by I.D.‘s column this month is entitled, “Organizational Stupidity: The Total is Less Than the Sum of Its Parts”. It’s meant to be a humorous look at e-learning, but for anyone who has designed courseware with (among other problems):

  • Content that is so simplified that it is embarrassing.
  • Lesson summary screens that don’t summarize what’s in the lesson, but just re-list the objectives under the heading “In this lesson, you have learned…”
  • Courseware navigation that is intuitive only in the imaginary world of the person who designed it.

Sure, the author lets us off the hook by allowing us to claim that we work in environments with:

  • Poor project communication, role definition, lines of responsibility, lack of coaching, training, or investment in software support.
  • A work climate that stifles alternate views, rewards conformity and favouritism, and encourages passive behaviour.

But… Read the article and let me know if it looks a little too much like a view in the mirror.
