Check out those predicted specs – 1 teraflops capable cpu power, within two years, optical firewire, 5 ft 3D flat screens!
Interestingly, the main crux of this research note is that gaming takes away from TV viewing and therefore advertising.
But think of the sophisticated cognitive skillsets that are emerging from this generation of gamers – and the immediate cultural acceptance of playing over networks.
How can these skills and cultural norms be harnessed and leveraged for education? Will the workforce of the future expect rich, collaborative environments that match the immersiveness of their gaming environments?
I think the cognitive elements from gaming will be expected – control over the experience, collaboration, immediate feedback, involvement in the narrative and the ability to assimilate multiple feeds of small information chunks rapidly.
The xbox’s distrubuted gaming over a broadband connection is pretty nifty – with an audio headset giving great feedback and player involvement.
I think the PC multiplayer games I’ve seen show even more potential though – the richness of Everquest and Sims Online is incredible – plus they’re not just Quake style blow ‘em ups, there’s real, delicate human interaction/negotiation going on in those games.
I must get a PC for gaming at home.
