Four countries commit to 4 million Linux-powered OLPC laptops:
“A spokesperson for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program revealed July 31 that the countries of Nigeria, Brazil, Argentina, and Thailand have each committed to buy 1 million Linux laptops through the U.S.-based program…”
Excellent news. India apparently pulled out of ordering the laptops, as they felt $100 million could be spent on teachers and school infrastructure instead of the devices. That’s a good point (I’m not even going to tackle the question, it’s way beyond my frames of reference), but I’m really interested to see these laptops in use, and see how the proposed educational benefits are realised…
