Encyclopedia of Educational Technology
Average Reading Time: about a minute.
At San Diego State University, Bob Hoffman of the Department of Educational Technology is editing an online Encyclopedia of Educational Technology, which he describes as
a collection of short multimedia articles on a variety of topics related to the fields of instructional design and education and training. The primary audiences for the EET are students and novice to intermediate practitioners in these fields, who need a brief overview as a starting point to further research on specific topics. Authors are graduate students, professors, and others who contribute voluntarily. Articles are short and use multimedia to enrich learning rather than merely decorate the pages.
The quality of content — as is to be expected of any collaborative knowledge capture project such as this — varies greatly by contributor, but I doubt if there is any other place on the web where you can read short articles on Cognitive Load Theory, Keller’s ARCS Model, Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development right alongside discussions of Webpage Design, Ergonomics in the Computer Classroom and Blended Learning.
I have a few minor criticisms of the site, including the amateurish quality of some of the “multimedia” elements, and the lack of links to Amazon or online textbook stores or academic libraries in the Bibliography. More surprising is the lack of publication dates for the articles or CVs for contributors. Still, the EET is a great effort and a worthy bookmark.
