Conversations with neighbours? What a novelty!

“…Conversations…meet people living in your area and discuss local issues…”
UpMyStreet have a localised conversation server. Living in a block of apartments, I think I’ve seen my neighbours exactly twice and have never engaged them in decent conversation. UpMyStreet is super smart – I looked at this years ago, as a it’s run by a friend of a friend of someone who used to know someone etc. and while it was really impressive, it didn’t interest me too much. But now that I have a child, need to buy a house, pay too much council tax, worry about my electricity bill etc etc…
Now, here’s a business idea – upmydepartment.com, for those big sprawling multi-million person companies, I’d personally like one that hooked me into people doing the same job as me in different organisations and parts of the world. I think it’s interesting that the context of the conversation is set somewhat by the usage of the website – the conversations I saw where along the lines of “I’m moving here, any advice?” rather than “this town is crap etc.” I.e. not all open online community conversations descend into mindless chatter. Or maybe it’s not been used enought yet. Got the link from benhammersley – another rss feed (I think in the thought category) and well worth reading.
