I quite like boxing, even though I loathe ‘sport’ and can’t shake the intellectual dissatisfaction with the core idea of knocking someone’s brain against their skull until they fall over.

But boxing back then, and particularly with Ali, seemed like something far more noble. Ali seems to inspire gifted writing – Mailer’s ‘The Fight’ still sticks in my mind a decade after I last read it.
