1. WHAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT What I won't talk about: - publishing - business models - The Girl with the Dragon bloody Tattoo - caveat: focus on non fiction What I will talk about: - have a look at current state of reading on da pad - the near future(s) of iPad reading 2. IPAD AS A READING DEVICE iPad is the perfect reading device - it's not something you'd do on the PC, it's 'ok' on the iphone...so, it's not 'in between' - it's pretty much perfect - Nick Carr argues that short attention span devices - single focus - whole screen consumes - gives me permission, whereas a laptop screams tasks, and a phone rings.. - Ok, I know it sounds like a book - that's kind of the point But this is a connected book... - needs more in-app controls over brightness, but i really, really like it - wait for rev 2 with a denser ppi 3. CURRENT STATE OF READING ON IPAD: Magazines & newspapers as Apps - Popular Science - criticised by Jakob Neilsen for difficulty of use - integrated publishing workflow - new format, so they're wrestling with speed to launch, etc Wired Magazine - critiqued by iA for readability of columns - does feel a bit CD-ROMy Demo trying to copy text... Ooh, this is interesting, let me copy some text, and link to it.... I can't link Summary - Magazines are perfect as apps; self contained, look lovely, you want to cradle, poke, swipe, prod and explore - But they're closed experiences Books as Apps - disagree with Craig Mod - fiction, airport cheap prints...continue to be printed, disposable - deeper, more interesting and niche reference books as dedicated apps - 'ideas' books as kindle/ibooks content Example Phaidon - printed version weighs 2kg - It's in BETA (show search etc. status message) - could be updated over time...reference books etc. - There's a support site...sign of the times Book Apps - books are a container of ideas across time (Bob Stein) - Books, more mediative, deeper experience iBooks - imitating previous technology... - page turns, faux wood bookshelves - make for great family + friends demo - stacked pages - awful - iA idea for amount of time left - App for that? Kindle.app - I like it - syncing between phone and iPad - footnote problem...ifI had a single book.... - shitty text layout...really, really needs work - shared annotations - more with twitter etc. - adding shared passages... Demo trying to copy text.. - Ooh, this is interesting, let me copy some text, and link to it.... - I can't link - but it's still a closed container Summary - needs lot of work on typography - Kindle's a better app, because of ecosystem - books don't need to look like books - still a closed experience, text in not back out 4. THE NEAR FUTURE(S): We face two futures...(red/green pill) Closed: - looks like iBooks - dumb consumers - lovely, but pointless presentation - publishers pricing to avoid cannibalising paper books Open: - compare wired app to wired web - Open Texts - the web! - the future is...html5... Instapaper - best reading experience on iPad/iPhone - Reflowable Text - Selectable - Shareable Social reading - Curation - Instapaper starred folders - It's happening - shared annotations (amzn photo) Shared reading experiences Bookeepr Golden Notebook 5. PEOPLE TO FOLLOW - @craigmod - @iA - booktwo.org - futureofthebook.org 6. SUMMARY - iPad's single focus is great for reading - Magazines are beautiful, but closed - Books as Apps, not just Book apps - Text out, not just in - Better typography, please 7. EBOOKS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES - Photo of Patrick reading kindle.app - Real opportunity is to distribute ideas cheaply and quickly around the world - iPad is a lovely, but luxury device - Innovation should happen to distribute content, not just display on iPads Further Reading: Craig Mod - Books in the age of the iPad http://pidl.in/9zuBJb - Embracing the Digital Book http://pidl.in/9DwK6Z iA: - Critique of Wired.app http://pidl.in/dupK24 James Bridle - http://www.booktwo.org Books as Apps - http://www.enhanced-editions.com Look at Kindle's new sharing features: - http://pidl.in/92qQBR Instapaper - http://www.instapaper.com
